After dropping Vanessa off at her apartment, Rudy drove to Dora’s, calling to tell her he was on his way. Rather than let him in, Dora came down to the front door. “Now what?”

“We need to talk.”

“Well, how ’bout we go for a walk?” she suggested.

“Sure.”

The heat of the day had not yet dissipated, and the air was heavy with humidity. Fireworks crackled from a block away. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles from the main road could be heard in the distance.

“What did you want to talk about?” Dora asked.

“Jesse did know this guy, Doyle, but he wasn’t really involved with him. They were aware of one another.”

Dora considered this. “So, you’re saying Julius gave the police his name so they’d back off.”

“I honestly don’t know. Could be.”

“Was there a connection Doyle had with Julius that had something to do with Jesse’s death?”

“Not that I’m aware of.”

Dora stopped walking. “So, what are you aware of? Why are you here?”

Rudy stopped a few steps ahead of Dora and waited while a girl in jean shorts and a light blue t-shirt walked a dachshund slowly past them in the opposite direction.

“Doyle’s connection to this had nothing to do with Julius—at least, I don’t believe it did.”

“Okay.”

“Jesse knew who Doyle was the way a lot of us know who’s doing what around here. It’s a small town, Dora.” She began walking again and caught up with Rudy.

“No one knows that better than me. Everything that went down a year and a half ago taught me all about the sick connections people have around here.” She glanced at two teenage boys on motorized skateboards who caught up to them in the street and passed them. “So, what was Jesse’s connection to Doyle? Did he buy from him?”

Rudy didn’t answer.

“You want to talk to me or to Detective Ganderson? The Goose and the Gander are shot out of a cannon about this—with the publicity about this and the drug busts, the opioids, the fentanyl. They’re feeling the pressure downtown, and they’d just love to spread it around.”

“I get that,” Rudy said. He hesitated, his jaw tight. “Jesse didn’t buy from Doyle. He went to him because he needed help.”

“Help with what?”

Rudy shook his head. “Can’t say.”

“Can’t or won’t?”

“I’m just not saying, is all.”

“You know the Goose and the Gander are going to be all over you about this. And they’re going to really lean on you.”

Rudy gave her a hard look. “Yeah? So, who’s going to tell them?”
